I have recently become aware of the problem with the video chips in the HP Pavilion TX series laptops.  I have been a pc tech for almost ten years now and I have had two customers come to me, both with Pavilion TX 1000 laptops where the screens suddenly went black on them when they attempted to boot up the machines.  I have read on many forums across the web of probably thousands of people that have this same issue and have not been able to get HP to do anything about it.  My heart goes out to all of you that are having this problem.  I know that this is extremely frustrating and because of that, I wanted to post how I was able to get both of my customers laptops working again with what I believe to be a pretty solid work around that many of you should be able to either do on your own or have someone do for you.  When I received both of the laptops, the screens were black when I tried to boot them up and they were even hard to get to boot up at all.  Once I got them to boot, still with a black screen, I closed the lid on them and let them sit for about 30 minutes to warm up a bit.  Then, I opened the lid up and pressed down very firmly on the keyboard in the area of the U, I, O, J, K and L keys with the heel of my palm and held it down for about 4 seconds.  It may take a few tries for it to work.  After lifting my hand, I tried booting them up and they booted with video on the screen.  Once I got them to boot with video, I put a Vista disc in and rebooted them and proceeded to reload Vista on them, formatting the hard drives in the process (remember to save your data before doing this).  Once the install was done and windows was up and running, I proceeded to load all of the component drivers except the video driver, I just left the video driver that Vista loaded which is a Standard VGA Graphics Adapter.  I put the display resolution up to the highest I could, which is 1024×768.  This looks fine considering the screen is not very big anyway.  The reason I chose not to load the manufacturers video drivers is because I believe that this will keep the video chip from overheating and thus keep the laptop from getting the black screen.  Both of the laptops have been running fine for days now with no problems at all.  I will say that the one problem that you will run into with this fix is that if you try running any graphic intensive games or videos, you will see allot of lag in them because of using the Standard VGA Driver.  I hope that this helps many, many of you to get more life out of your very flawed laptops.

1.  Charge it early and often. If you’re not planning on using it for a period of time, you should only discharge it to about 40 percent of its capacity.
2.  Every 30th charge, discharge it completely to recalibrate its internal tracking software.
3.  Unless you’re performing number 4, never allow the battery’s charge to be depleted past its minimum voltage.
4.  When not using it for a period of time (this also applies to any spares you might purchase), store it or them in the refrigerator. Heat kills batteries.  So no leaving them in parked cars in the summertime.
5.  Don’t put it in the freezer by mistake. Not good.
6.  If you’re planning on using the power supply for extended periods of time (BatteryEdge.com sells power supplies as well), remove the battery and store it in the ‘fridge. Again, not the freezer.
7.  If you’re storing a spare, do so at about a 40 percent charge.
8.  Most professionals have at least one spare as a backup, and store it in the refrigerator at about 40 percent. When needed, they can use it or charge it to full capacity almost immediately.  Some batteries will provide more energy when brought up to room temperature.
